WHAT'S YOUR PERSONAL/PROFESSIONAL MOTTO?

My professional motto is the same as my personal one: ‘Stay true to who you are’.

On a professional level, there are so many voices telling creatives to cut corners or go with the latest selling trend, all to make money faster. Yes, of course I want a successful business just like we all do but it has to succeed while staying true to who I am as an artist and a person. Everyone has their own distinct style and should be proud of their unique talents; we should always try to follow our own path to success. I honestly believe that success is inevitable for anyone who stays true.

WHAT DOES SUCCESS MEAN TO YOU?

For me, success means doing something that I love while still being able to have time with my family. That’s probably my favourite thing about starting a creative business. I can set my own hours doing something that I truly enjoy so that I don’t miss out on any of the special moments that come and go so quickly in our lives.

AT WHAT POINT IN YOUR LIFE DID YOU FIRST LEARN ABOUT YOUR FIELD OF WORK? WHAT CALLED YOU TO IT?

In November of 2014, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I spent most of 2015 completing chemo therapy, surgery and radiation. It became obvious to me that I would not likely ever work in an office again.  So what would I do? I was only 51 yrs old and too young to say my life was done. And I never could sit still for long.  While I do own a landscape company and work doing the administration for it - it wasn’t enough for me. Most of my career was in the charitable sector and giving back has always been in my blood. I began to notice just how much waste our company was creating. This disturbed me and I wanted to do something about it.  So I began to collect all the off cuts from our wood projects and make candle holders for my friends and family. This quickly morphed into Knotty Creations. Wood products created from our job site left overs. My favourite are the Douglas Fir Christmas trees we made taken from a 1918 front porch we replaced. I love the history behind them, the grain, the old nails.  I’ve also discovered that I’m pretty creative. It’s been fun going through the process and learning new things about myself.

IN MOMENTS OF SELF-DOUBT OR ADVERSITY, HOW DO YOU BUILD YOURSELF BACK UP?

There is no scare worse than knowing you have cancer.  You question everything. You doubt it all. I have had several moments of doubt in the last 3 years.

Thankfully I am surrounded by the best loving and caring people. Whenever I am down or worried I turn to my support team. My husband is my ROCK!  His personal motto is “ We are all Keepers of the Forest!”  His strength has been my guide to keep going. Lift myself up and persevere. I’ve already looked my mortality in the face and Right now I’m  winning. I love what I do and I’m lucky to be able to do it.

WHAT'S YOUR PERSONAL/PROFESSIONAL MOTTO?

"Live sincerely, work meaningfully." Because there is not enough days in our lives that they could be wasted by doing things that don`t make our souls feel complete and which our hearts don`t burn for.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THE HOLIDAY SEASON?

The feeling of peace and joy that resonates in our souls and spills out to our conversations, relationships and all our encounters, no matter how random they can be.

AT WHAT POINT IN YOUR LIFE DID YOU FIRST LEARN ABOUT YOUR FIELD OF WORK? WHAT CALLED YOU TO IT?

I first learned to make shoes during my undergrad, some 15 years ago now. At the time I was constantly being told that artisan skills, such as shoemaking and millinery, were becoming extinct and I just couldn't face a world without makers. I took College courses as night, while I studied at University during the day, and I created an Independant Study apprenticing Jitterbug Boy Jeff Churchill for a year. It wasn't until my son was born that I began using my skills to make baby shoes, and now I just can't stop creating!

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THE HOLIDAY SEASON?

The Holiday season holds a special place in my heart because it draws everyone closer and brings out the goodness in people. People come together to share, they step out of their shells a bit more, they are a bit more vulnerable. For me, it's a time to get really cozy, relish the time with friends and family, reflect on the past year, and spread joy. I feel the most like myself at the Holidays.

Christine Dias Monteiro // TREECLUB KIDS

AT WHAT POINT IN YOUR LIFE DID YOU FIRST LEARN ABOUT YOUR FIELD OF WORK? WHAT CALLED YOU TO IT?

I was that child who made handmade gifts for family members. I always had a desire to create and I dreamed of one day starting something that I could call my own. In my teens, I remember watching a documentary on Japanese woodworking and was so taken by the artistry and passion that these artisans held for their craft. That was when I knew I wanted to work with wood. After my first DIY project (building a wooden box) it was official, I was hooked. I continued to build my range of woodworking knowledge and tools and today, what started out as a hobby, has grown into my own small business of making handcrafted wooden toys for little ones.

WHAT CHARACTERISTIC DO YOU ADMIRE THE MOST IN OTHER CREATIVES?

The thing I admire most in other creatives is their courage, their optimism and their enthusiasm. It takes guts to go after your dreams. I'm inspired by their stories and struggles which encourage me to put aside my fears and just go for it. Every time I visit The Nooks, I'm amazed by all the talent around me and also by the fact so many fellow creatives are pursuing their passions while balancing a day job and kids. In this age of mechanized, mass produced, sameness it's so refreshing to be part of the creative revolution that dares to dream and dares to be different.

WHICH OF YOUR TRAITS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

I always see the good in people, generally until they can prove me otherwise. I will always choose to believe people are good on the inside. I also feel that I can easily go out of my way to help someone in need, even though I may not even know them.

WHAT DOES SUCCESS MEAN TO YOU?

Success means being able to do things I love, caring and cooking for my family, choosing our healthy lifestyle (at least what this means to us) and still having some time to dedicate to this fantastic dream of my handmade business!

WHAT CHARACTERISTICS DO YOU ADMIRE THE MOST IN OTHER CREATIVES?

I admire an organized visionary. This specimen does exist...right? I admire anyone who has that unique flare to create combined with that sensible urge to clean up immediately, still have a knack for the back-end of business, all the while staying on top of the daily. TRUE ADMIRATION.

Another strong characteristic I admire is the ability to take criticism well. Whether you make a change or not, take comments + recommendations in and let them percolate without getting offended. A lot of innovations become from this!

IN MOMENTS OF SELF-DOUBT OR ADVERSITY, HOW DO YOU BUILD YOURSELF BACK UP?

I’ve come across moments like this A LOT in life + business. Who hasn't? The exercise that I learned below from a past life coach, never fails. Try it!

  1. Jot down what is creating doubt. [Ex. "My product isn't good enough to sell". I had packaging made that I was certain I loved the weight of the paper used, but when it complete, I ended up hating it, and was convinced it was no longer good enough.]
  2. Replace doubt with truth. [Ex. "Sold out product." Everyone complimented how beautiful the packaging was, and the product sold out]

Another thing that I make sure to do is save any notes, texts, messages, posts from clients that love my work. I have a whole collection now to look into for a confidence boost!
