Tell us about you and what role 'hand-made' plays in your life...

I have been into handmade for as long as I can remember. My career has been in policing but I have almost always had a side ‘something’ on the go. I have four children, and when I was pregnant with my first child I took sewing classes with aspirations of sewing all of her clothes. Needless to say Baby Gap provided most of my kids' clothes but I did make some things, including some highly embarassing matching floral mother/daughter outfits. In my defence, it was the early nineties.

I was all over crafting in that decade and later got obsessed with baking and started making customized decorated cookies. I was happy to be able to make the wedding favours for some of my police partners. My baking obsession eventually culminated in a cupcake shop and while it was amazing to create custom creations for special occasions (especially weddings), owning a full-time retail business has its challenges.

What is something fun/ interesting/ personal about you and your business?

My current passion is making candles. I have always loved candles but after noticing black soot from most candles that I bought I did some research and learned that paraffin wax releases toxic chemicals into the air while burning. That is one of those things that you cannot know and just ignore. Research led me to safer, clean-burning soy wax and I ordered supplies with a plan of making candles that I could enjoy and maybe give a few away as gifts.

Life got busy and my candle making plan went to the wayside. Life also decided to throw a curveball our way. My 23 year-old daughter was diagnosed with a brain tumour in October 2016 and had brain surgery.

During her recovery period the holiday season was upon us. We were looking for things to keep us busy, and thought about making some handmade gifts. I remembered the candle making supplies and dug them out. We made candles for gifts for family and friends and everybody loved them and wanted more. Four Wishes was born and candle making has become my new obsession.

My amazing daughter has recovered and moved on to her passion which is medicine. She is currently in medical school in Ireland.

How did you get interested in becoming a maker? What do you love about it?

I love the experience of creating. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing the end result of your vision. I enjoy making something that people truly enjoy and appreciate.

What is it that you specialize in within the crafting/handmade goods world?

I specialize in making the highest quality soy wax candles. Each candle is hand poured. Soy wax is natural, safe and clean burning and will last up to 50% longer than paraffin wax. Our candles are scented with essential oils and phthalate free fragrance oils and the wicks are wooden or lead-free cotton wicks.

Candles make a great gift and we love to customize labels for special orders. We are excited about wedding season and making custom candles for wedding favours.
