#SMALLBIZ PROFILES // ANITA SHIELS OF ANITA SHIELS ART
Tell us a bit about you and your #smallbiz…
Interestingly enough I never dreamed of selling my art as a business. It blossomed from a hobby into a small little business because of the feedback and support of family and friends. I have 2 boys and have been lucky enough to dedicate my time to raising them. Now that they are more independent, I have more time to work on my art. With the piles of art growing around the house, a friend encouraged me to contact a local store to see if they would be interested in selling some of my pieces and that is where Anita Shiels Art started.
What about your business are you passionate about?
Passion is fueled by connections. Painting provides a connection to strangers who see something in my art that resonates with them. My art is very personal so when someone purchases it, they have made a personal connection to the piece. It keeps me painting.
What is something fun/ interesting/ personal about you and your business?
I think people would be surprised how much I love to paint. I would do it all day, every day if possible. I always paint to music that inspires me. Lately, I have been only listening to the Come From Away soundtrack. I saw the musical in February and it is just so inspirational. My art is deeply personal and part of who I am, so much so that sometimes when asked about my art, I find it difficult to talk about.
What does being a Canadian small business mean to you?
I love the idea of being a small cog on a big wheel. The support that small business owners like the Nooks provide for artisans is an incredible platform for people to share their work. Small businesses provide a connection to their community and being part of a culture of people working together towards a shared success.
