MAKERS GIVE BACK // VALERIE RODRIGO-BIBB
How do you give back?
I currently volunteer for City Street Outreach providing food, clothing and assistance to the homeless, street-involved youth, seniors, new immigrants, single mothers and individuals/ families in need and/or living in poverty.
I also volunteer at the Scarborough Bluffs Community Association as a Board member serving the Birchcliff, Cliffside and Cliffcrest communities. I help to organize and lead community building events and centralize and unite the community under a single banner.
Why have you chosen to give back in this way?
Volunteering has been an essential part of my life, since most of my career was spent in the charitable sector. I have always felt drawn to helping others. I am mostly a hands-on person, and chose these two organizations because I felt had a direct and meaningful impact within my community.
What is the most rewarding / important / meaningful part of giving back?
Last Christmas, I was able to prepare food and feed a family who would not have otherwise had a Christmas dinner. THIS is meaningful to me. The joy they expressed at my kindness can’t be measured. There are so many people who need our help on a daily basis. The simple things that can be done to help, like providing clothing, food, etc….give me such satisfaction. Participating in these acts of giving back, gives me hope.
