KIRSTEN MCCARTHY OF BLOOMFIELD NATURAL SOAPS
Tell us a bit about you and your #smallbiz…
Hi, my name is Kirsten. I am a full-time adult education teacher and a passionate gardener. I love discovering ways to live life a little more simply and naturally. Around three years ago, I learned about the wonderful world of melt and pour soap and became obsessed with creating soap for family and friends. Shortly thereafter, I wondered about making my own natural liquid hand soap. I found a basic recipe and tinkered with the ingredients until I came up with a lovely, soothing, moisturizing and exotically fragrant hand soap that is good for your skin and doesn’t harm our environment. (It works great as a body wash, too!)
What about your business are you passionate about?
I believe in giving my customers a soap that is made with love and respect for the natural environment. I think that people really need to start working together and taking responsibility to make nature cleaner. I am passionate about connecting with people and sharing my beautiful soap with them.
What is something fun/ interesting/ personal about you and your business?
I think in the back of my mind, I’ve always been interested in starting my own business. As a professional teacher, I always thought I would provide a tutoring service or open a childcare centre. But those ideas don’t give me the same kind of joy that making something by hand does. Whether it is a woodworking project for my garden, a watercolour greeting card for a friend’s birthday or gorgeous soap for someone I love, I prefer to make it. I love the journey of challenging myself to try something new and the pride of accomplishment when the project is finished. I am so excited to join a community of other artisans in a supportive environment and learn about starting my soap business.
What does being a Canadian small business mean to you?
Being a Canadian small business means that I have the opportunity to share my handmade soap with people who will hopefully love my product as much as my friends and family do. It means that other people have a choice to buy something that is made locally and with love while reducing their carbon footprint, taking care of their bodies and taking care of the environment.
