NATAVAN KHASIYEVA OF AT NAVI'S
Hi, I'm Navi, and handmade saved my life. About one year ago I had a difficult accident that left me paralyzed from the waist down. I fell 30 feet and broke my spine in two places. For the first few months the only thing I could feel was gratitude that I survived. I could have broken my neck or worse, I could have smashed my head on the ground. As time went by during my rehabilitation, I was left with little to fill my time. I knew that I couldn’t go back to my previous job, and that I was in a position where I had to figure life out all over again. This is when my mom started bringing crafts for us to do while I was living in the rehabilitation center. We started with knitting and crocheting. My mom and I have always made crafts together and it was a way for me to re-connect with her. We’ve experimented with decoupage, soap making, kimekomi, batik and many more techniques throughout the years.
When I was discharged from the rehabilitation centre my mom and I started experimenting with polymer clay and the mokume gane technique. I instantly fell in love with this technique because of the endless possibilities of colors and designs. What I love most about it is that each piece is completely one of a kind. The material is durable and the metal parts I use are all gold and silver plated. The process is long and every step is important to get the piece to the quality that I want.
It is extremely important and rewarding for me to be able to share my story and my art with people. I love participating at craft fairs as I am able to interact with other artists and share experiences. My dream is to be able to support myself fully from my handmade business because this is what I love to do the most.
