In 2014 I was looking for something to do that would allow me to be a stay-at-home parent after my second child was born. I originally had the idea to make Saskatchewan-shaped pillows a year earlier, but life has a habit of getting in the way so I just put it on the back burner.

As I was nearing the end of my pregnancy I realized that it was now or never, so I bought an embroidery machine from Kijiji, sketched out some maps, designed some labels and found a place to have my fabric printed. I was 36 weeks pregnant when I made my first cushion.
It's nearly 2 years later and I have sold over 1500 cushions!

I came up with the idea for Saskatchcushion whist driving. I live in rural Saskatchewan which is a beautiful place full of small towns and friendly people, people who are fiercely proud of their small towns. I thought it would be nice to make something to celebrate this small town pride, something customizable to all the communities in Saskatchewan no matter how small.

The map on the front of the pillow is familiar to all who live here. To customize it, I embroider a road sign of the small town's name and place it on the map, making any town look like its the most important town in the province! The back of the cushion has a list of all the communities, and surprisingly people seem to like that the most!

I have since branched out to our neighbouring provinces and I offer Alberta cushions as well as Manitoba cushions. I'm currently working on doing all of Canada, that's my end goal anyway.

I sell my cushions online through my website and generate sales through engagement on Facebook and Instagram. I try to get out and do some markets and I have cushions in a few retail stores throughout the province.

Living 3 hours from the nearest city hasn't really posed much of a problem, as social media has generated many opportunities for small businesses like mine.
