NOOKFEST ARTIST PROFILES // ARTIST NAZ RAHBAR OF ARTCAVE
Tell us about you and what role art plays in your life...
I’m an artist and educator. Art is what I do! I’m making art, teaching it, or thinking about it. I think art is powerful and fun. I don’t know how not to Art! I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts from OCAD University, and a Bachelor of Education from York University with a fine arts focus. Currently I’m completing a Masters of Fine Arts at York University.
What is something fun, interesting or personal about you and ArtCave?
I have been running ArtCave with my friend and colleague Nilou for five years now in the east end. We are both cat people! We talk about our cats and food a lot. We also love to have Kinder Surprise eggs when we have meetings. ArtCave has really grown organically and out of love. We are just two artists and teachers who wanted to make an inclusive and friendly studio space to teach and work. I feel like a big kid most of the time and making art or teaching it feels like playing sometimes. I didn’t play house when I was young, I played teacher. Juggling being a teacher, running ArtCave and being an artist is hard sometimes, but I really do enjoy it.
How did you become an artist? What do you love about it?
I think it just happened! I grew up around artist and musicians and learned to love art from a young age. I don’t know life without art. What I love is the freedom in art, the infinite possibilities, the lack or borders and boundaries. I love that it provides me a happy place in solitude but also brings people together. What I love about being an artist is the community of artists I get to call friends, and the alone studio time!
