NOOKFEST MUSICIAN PROFILES // SOCAL HUNNIES
Who are SoCal Hunnies? Tell us about you + your sound.
SoCal Hunnies is a groove and soul inspired rock band. We are a 3 piece that likes to make music that moves our feet, so we hope that’s what we make you do.
What role music does/has music played in your life?
We’ve all come from a variety of musical backgrounds and have played in a lot of different bands over the years. One thing that is a common thread for SoCal Hunnies is that writing music, jamming with other musicians, and performing live are our outlets. They provide balance when life gets really busy and hectic. Music is something that we always make time for. It makes us feel alive, and we want to share that love with our friends and families, and anyone who will listen.
Tell us about your musical journey so far.
SoCal Hunnies hit the ground running! We’ve only been together for six months now, and have already written 10+ original songs, have been lucky enough to perform at a couple great local festivals and venues across the GTA, and are heading into the studio in Hamilton this fall. We’ll be releasing some new content soon!
This band is truly about musical connections over the years and being in the right place at the right time. In 2008, Russell and Nick met working at a summer camp and formed a band called Out in the AM. Nick later moved to South Korea for work, and met a guy named Michael Hamilton. A few years later Michael introduced Nick to Dave Stuckey, his hometown friend. They kept in touch over the the next few years while Dave played bass in King Tut, and Russell and Nick continued to write new music casually. They then rejoined forces as part of The Jealous Creatures, who later became Phantom Club. Once that band ended, Michael Hamilton texted Nick about a music festival opportunity in Uxbridge, called Springtide. Nick called up Russell and Dave; "Let’s keep it casual and write a few songs. Just see what happens." he said. SoCal Hunnies was born.
What can people look forward to from your performance at NookFEST?
