ELLE SCOTLAND OF NEWT BY ELLE
Growing up in the small town of Portland Ontario, I was fortunate to be raised in a creative family of entrepreneurs. Having always had an interest in style, beauty, and travel – when these things finally all aligned and presented an opportunity here in Toronto, I was beyond ecstatic to start designing and creating a product of my own. I wanted to create something that was all-natural, affordable, but also a bit sassy and luxurious.
NEWT BY ELLE
Newt by Elle creates all natural botanical oils for your face, hair + body.
We often are asked ‘Why the name Newt’? At a young age I began collecting newts and salamanders and kept them in our family solarium in a lush tank. I was fascinated by their mysterious mannerisms and vibrant colours. It is a newt's slick protective outer layer, the radiance of their neon complexion, and their ability to swiftly adapt to different environments that continuously inspires our brand and is where the name came from.
I began developing and designing our two skincare products after inquiring about a few treatments that would help to correct sun damage, as I had damaged my skin years back when sun protection was optional – these treatments were very expensive and invasive. I began researching what oils could help to correct sun spots and fell in love with Marula Oil and was thrilled with the results – the testing process began. My favourite part of being a maker is the freedom of design; whether that be website, labels, photoshoots, formulas, market displays, business cards – I love it all. If I want to change something or make a mistake, I switch it up. My partner and I are fortunate enough to work on this project together which makes every event or lesson that much greater. We hope to expand the skincare line soon, and just have fun with it.
MY ARTISTIC COMMUNITY
Lately one of the most rewarding experiences has been attending all of the markets within the city that showcase local and handmade goods. Seeing other’s ideas and what they are making is so fascinating, every show there is a product that I have never seen before or thought of – which in our current world of disposable products is rare. The maker community is also rare, as they understand what similar struggles you have encountered and even before consumers, they are the first to support their neighbours. In our community of makers and at shows we are kind of known for ‘the ones with the Gold oil’ – I like that.
THOUGHTS ON HANDMADE
The thing about having and creating something that is your own, is you always want to provide the best quality of everything you are doing to your supporters. It is okay to experiment and take your time with design and all aspects of the craft, these things don’t happen overnight, neither do sales. Never stop, if something doesn’t work - move onto the next. Keep creating, designing, taking risks and working on a concept or idea that you can’t leave behind.
